about

Burning! Burning! takes its themes from the symbolism of light and fire, ritual, poltergeists, neolithic monuments, space exploration and old legends. The themes grew from a few key events in the life of singer-songwriter David Bramwell in 2019, including joining a druidic order (the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids) meeting the author Alan Garner and becoming drawn into an elderly neighbour’s ongoing problems with a poltergeist.

Anthemic electro-psychedelic tracks like Sol Ra and Twice Around the Sun explore solstice rituals and the neolithic landmarks around Wiltshire; Chime Children plays on an old legend that those born at midnight are blessed with musical ‘powers’ and second sight.
Leave Behind mixes music with extracts from a frank interview with neighbour Pat and her poltergeist issues which, she claims, taunt her with the cryptic message, ‘leave behind’, a phrase that is repeated on different songs on the album. It is followed by the Nymanesque piano-driven Where Are the Memories of Henry Sergeant? a song that came to Bramwell in a dream, alluding to the true identity of Pat’s poltergeist.

The album’s one cover, Frozen Warnings, brews up Nico’s minimalist drone into a pounding soupy psychedelia track, contrasting with Night of the Dab Tsog, a hypnotic track with echoes of Midlake. The lyrics tell the true story of how hundreds of healthy men from the Hmong tribe in Laos mysteriously died in their sleep when relocating to the US in 1979 following a coup. The Hmong believed these men to have been visited by the dab tsog, equivalent to our night hag. Western doctors remain mystified to this day.

The album ends with the anthemic Marian Marks. During Bramwell’s visit to Alan Garner’s 15th century home in Alderley, the author and his wife Griselda revealed the Marian Marks and Daisy Wheels scratched into the doorways and staircases of their house, there to ward off evil spirits. Marian Marks draws together the occult and (quietly) political themes of the album to act as an invocation. Time to ‘leave behind.’
